Bienvenido! Welcome! - Purpose and History
Guatemala Aid Fund is a 100% Volunteer non-profit organization focused on improving the lives and futures of abandoned children and families in need in Guatemala by supporting sustainable education and health programs that generate opportunities for future employment and self-sufficiency.
We are dedicated to supporting Guatemalan-run programs that promote use of the Guatemalan job force and local commerce, the support and preservation of indigenous languages and culture, environmentally conscious projects and advancement of programs that will continue to expand the education and living situation for abandoned children with hope for better opportunities. Outreach programs support children, youth and parent education, health and environmental protection projects at the local level.
Our organization was founded in 2001 by Bethany Eisenberg Zeeb, an adoptive mother of two Guatemalan-born children. After returning home from Guatemala, she decided to stop exchanging expensive Christmas gifts with friends and family, and instead have a holiday party to collect supplies to help the Hermano Pedro Orphanage/Hospital in Antigua, Guatemala. That initial effort grew into the current program that supports in-country community supported and child/family focused programs for self-sufficiency and safety, as well as land and indigenous culture preservation.
Our work is funded entirely through tax-deductible donations. Funds go to programs providing deep change through education and job training with incentives and accountability. Food, clothing, education, medical and psychological support, family and parenting support, as well as sustainable environmental initiatives and special projects are funded. Education is a very high priority for GAF fundraising as our goal is to enable all children opportunities for a consistent education, something that is often completely out of reach for Guatemalan children. Programs are based on attendance and improvement resulting in change, not hand outs.
Programs include family counseling and community education as well. Creating jobs and opportunities for children and families to safely live, work and contribute in their own communities.... and to stay in their beautiful country. Eliminating the root causes of extreme poverty and dangerous and often deadly migration attempts for survival.
